We’re ten days away from Earth Hour. As I posted last month, Earth Hour started in Sydney, Australia last year.
The point: get everyone in the city, people and businesses, to coordinate a shutoff of their lights for one hour. The results were astounding:
On 31 March 2007, 2.2 million people and 2100 Sydney [...]

Green products sell. Marketing your product or company as Green is Hot. And big business is all over it.
But telling the world that you’re Green and actually being certified organic/LEED/fair-trade/sustainable/etc. is something different.
Founded by the EnviroMedia Group, The Greenwashing Index defines itself as “the world’s first online interactive forum that allows consumers to [...]

St. Patrick’s Day has special significance, but most people know it just for the beer we’re encouraged to drink.
And does anyone outside of Illinois know that the Chicago River is dyed green each year for the St. Patrick’s Day celebration? Of course, it’s an environmentally-friendly agent they use for color (nudge, nudge).
In [...]

New Belgium Brewing Company, the maker of Fat Tire, Blue Paddle and Sunshine Wheat, is a sustainable company. Pretty impressive when you consider how ubiquitous they’ve become.
They have a portion of their site dedicated to sustainability as a core value (in addition to philanthropy and ownership).
How does a brewery maintain a sustainable production? Here are [...]

Within the last 2 years:
My sister-in-law bought a new car
My mother-in-law bought a new car
This drives me nuts:
We own a Toyota Prius.
Both my sister-in-law and mother-in-law have ridden in it.

Neither bought a hybrid.
And why?
Sadly, it was both an uncertainty over driving a different kind [...]

Would you drink hemp beer?
The question should be: if you like beer, why would you not?
I’ll admit that I picked up a six-pack of Humboldt Brewing Company’s Hemp Ale out of curiosity. Humboldt Brewing Company makes great beer in general, so for me it was just a matter of trying something new.
The judgment: it was [...]

California residents are about to get sprayed with pesticides. Literally.
As part of a program to eradicate the dreaded apple moth, several California counties will be getting dosed by pesticides beginning in June.
And according to some, it’s not even practical or necessary. Or safe! This is scary stuff.
In his article Agriculture chief accused [...]

Today would have been my Mom, Lois Smith’s, 69th birthday. Sadly, we lost her last August.
Even though she is not here, she has everything to do with my daily motivation. The main reason that I started this blog was to create something positive. We went through so many negative things, as they related to her [...]

This is one of those rare occasions when two passions of mine intersect. In this case, baseball and environmentally friendly living.
Even better, it’s my favorite pro baseball team going green.
All part of their “Let’s Go Bucs, Let’s Go Green” program, which was developed in conjunction with the Natural Resources Defense Council. ‘Team Greening’ is the [...]

Embarassingly enough, I was reminded last night that Ryan Sutter, a former contestant on ABC’s The Bachelor, is a Green proponent.
Reminded because my wife found “The Bachelor: Where Are They Now?” on TV last night. I was falling asleep reading in my chair as she watched, so I didn’t get the full “effect” of the [...]
