Earth Hour is Ten Days Away

We’re ten days away from Earth Hour. As I posted last month, Earth Hour started in Sydney, Australia last year.

The point: get everyone in the city, people and businesses, to coordinate a shutoff of their lights for one hour. The results were astounding:

On 31 March 2007, 2.2 million people and 2100 Sydney businesses turned off their lights for one hour - Earth Hour. If the greenhouse reduction achieved in the Sydney CBD during Earth Hour was sustained for a year, it would be equivalent to taking 48,616 cars off the road for a year.

And this year the movement has gone global. On March 29th, people and businesses everywhere in the world have signed up to turn their lights for one hour.

As last count, 10,381 business have signed on.
154,143 people have signed up.

And noted in the news yesterday, the city of Dubai signed on as the first Arab city to support the Earth Hour initiative.

We’re in the homestretch, but the amount of people to sign up so far is pretty low.

If you haven’t signed up yet, go over to the Earth Hour site and sign up.

You want action? Feel like being Green? This is a really great place to join, and make a difference.

One Response to “Earth Hour is Ten Days Away”

  1. I love the Earth Hour initiative and can’t believe how fast it grown, especially in Canada. I remember a couple months ago when only 2 cities were officially signed up…

I work for Molson Canada in Toronto, and I’m very proud to say that all of Molson’s breweries and offices (across Canada) will be shutting off its lights (and more) for Earth Hour. Many will power off for the whole weekend. I love working for a company that is proud to play its part and hope to see more businesses join in over the next 5 days.

    Cheers!
