Whole Foods Banning Plastic Bags As a Business Move?
If you shop at Whole Foods, you’ve no doubt seen the ubiquitous green reusable bags they sell. As they’ve increased in popularity, Whole Foods has likewise been phasing out their use of plastic bags.
I’m all for this, and even pick up a $0.99 bag if ever in need at the checkout. But I had a thought tonight: isn’t this also a good business move for Whole Foods? If the plastic bags come at a minimal cost (maybe 1 cent per?) and the reusable ones cost $0.10 to make, aren’t they still making a tidy profit per bag?
Please keep in mind that I think the decisions Whole Foods make are usually very solid, founded in the same principles that I adhere to and commendable. Profit is important, and profit in the name of sustainability is generally defensible.
With the changes to local and federal laws, don’t forget that those helpful bags are also ones we’re all going to own very soon.
