BMW To Go Green?
Can you envision this new logo? According to this story, BMW is considering adding a green brand to its set of existing lines (BMW, Mini and Rolls-Royce).
The article states that BMW may be considering “more extreme technologies and vehicle types that would sit more easily with a new brand rather than BMW, whose exclusively rear-wheel drive models are less efficient than front-drive vehicles, or with the quirkier Mini range.”
Part of the motivation will be to use the new brand to improve the average CO2 emissions of its entire range. The European Union is threatening to fine manufacturers that fail to meet its upcoming CO2 reduction targets.
This is hardly a move out of the blue. BMW introduced their EfficientDynamics program, in 2007. This is a forward-thinking program encompassing changes to all facets of selected BMW cars, such as:
* Engine Stop/Start
* Regenerative Braking
* Electric Power Steering
* Air vent control
* Gear shift indicator
* Tires with reduced rolling resistance
* Other various aerodynamic aids
* The “hybridisation” of vehicles from mild to full hybrids in the near future
Every single auto manufacturer will be making announcements like this. 2008 will bring even more of them, including so-called alternative fuel technologies such as hydrogen fuel cells. It is a matter of course that we will not be 100% fuel-dependent for driving in the very near future.
Article note: for those unaccustomed to the term, marque translates to ‘brand’. Language primer!
Post note: I feel compelled to call myself out for not heeding my own promise. This is yet one more post on Green transportation/fuel. The short answer is that there is so much interesting information about Green energy, cars and so forth. And there are only so many hours in the day to post good information. I can say that the next set of information I have drafted is not in this precise category. Let’s talk about it all, but something else for now!
