Safeway Is Going Green
Safeway isn’t Whole Foods, but today’s news brings them that much closer.
Safeway, the nation’s 3rd-largest grocery chain, announced that its entire trucking fleet now runs on biodiesel. Biodiesel, as you may know, is a cleaner-burning fuel that can be made from plant oils and other renewable sources.
The company’s more than 1,000 trucks will run on biodiesel made from soy or canola oil. The switch to biodiesel is part of Safeway’s campaign to make its operations more environmentally friendly.
I guess all of those consumer studies are paying off! Safeway isn’t stopping there with the transition to Green:
The company is installing solar panels on two dozen of its California stores, using more energy-efficient lighting and refrigeration and buying electricity generated from wind farms.
This is huge news. Safeway has also been slowly making changes like developing their organic produce, meat and dairy offerings. I only do stop-bys for milk or other quick purchases. But, I’m very excited that such a large corporation is taking this stand. Five years ago, this may have been unimaginable.
For those that notice, this is my 3rd straight post relating to Green transportation (electric vehicles, alternative power and now biodiesel). I’ve got so much else to write and report, that I promise the next few will be on much different topics!
