Home Depot Eco Options

For those of you who haven’t seen this, Home Depot has rolled out their Eco Options brand/product channel.

The intent on the site is a little unclear. I was only able to derive ‘brand’ because they state that up front. What is clear is a commitment to offering eco-friendly products to the masses. It’s not every weekend warrior or contractor who will seek out low-VOC paints and FSC-certified wood.

The site is divided into 5 main channels:

    Sustainable Forestry
    Energy Efficient
    Healthy Home
    Clean Air
    Water Conservation

Within each channel, there are education points as well as product recommendations. For example, under Healthy Home, they reference Greenscaping and Reduced Toxicity Cleaners.

All channels include calculators (such as the Healthy Home Hazarodous Waste Generation calculator), to encourage interaction. At the top-level, there is also a subset of options all designed to encourage interaction and learning:

    Online Clinics
    Personal Energy Audits
    Green Project Guides
    Videos
    Eco Option Virtual Home Tour

As a wise man once said: “Don’t take my word for it, check it out for yourself!”.

I’m inclined to give Home Depot credit for this. Ultimately, I support our local hardware store by shopping for home improvement items there. In the case that I need to make purchases at Home Depot, knowing that they are attempting to promote eco-friendly products and concepts certainly helps!
