Green Holiday Season Tips - part 2: Trees
Here are more tips on how to “Green” your holiday season. Today, we focus on the original green: the Christmas Tree.
Trees are the original green! Choose real over plastic:
1. Plant a living tree: we did this last year! This was our 2nd living tree. The first one we never planted, but rather we decorated it then donated to a friend a few months later. You can find living trees anywhere from Home Depot to Smith And Hawken. These can also be perfect for short-term indoor use, followed by planting after the holidays.
2. Cut your own: we have a family tradition of driving into the local mountains to the Christmas Tree farm. We’re able to choose and cut our own beautiful tree. The good news is that trees are replenished, and new seedlings are planted for every tree cut. We also enjoy the fresher smells, and usually better quality and value that these trees bring.
3. Buy an organically grown tree: there are a handful of organic Christmas tree farms throughout the US. The best option is to check with local tree farms, or even through your local co-op or farmer’s market for the best local resource. I’m going to keep digging to find a more comprehensive resource on this.
4. Recycle your trees and greenery – don’t let them go to landfill. Our local waste service company has special pickup days for Christmas trees. They will also pick up trees on yard waste recycling days. What happens to the recycled greenery? According to earth911.org, treecycling is the very best option for your Holiday tree. Each one recycled goes to a very good use.
