Green Holiday Season Tips part 1: Gift-Wrapping and Cards
Here’s the first in a series of tips for Green-ing your Holiday Season this year: think less is more when it comes to holiday gift-wrapping and cards!
Be Creative - Think Less Waste
1. Rewrap – reuse wrapping paper from earlier gifts. We keep a small collection of wrapping paper, bows and ribbons from previous years’ gifts. From there, we can choose the best match for ‘rewrapping’ new gifts. Mixing and matching the paper and ribbons is just as creative and fun, and we can feel really good about reusing, not wasting, good quality wrapping paper. New gift wrap is truly never needed!
2. Send E-cards and cards made from recycled paper: saving on cards has a huge environmental impact. Why not send Holiday E-cards, such as these from Care2, to all friends and family? You also save on stamps and trips to the post office!
3. Rethink holiday cards: for those of us who still love the feeling of sending a card out in the mail, there is a very cool option: the plantable card. Bloomin flower cards, from Bloomin.com, feature full color images printed right on the seed paper itself, so you plant the entire card. Directions for growing are printed on the back. The designs are really simple and festive. We’re certain to use these this year!
4. Recycle all shipping materials: buying the Planet Earth DVDs online this year? Make sure to recycle not only the cardboard, but the packing peanuts as well. Places such as the UPS store will accept packing peanuts for reuse.
