Nike Reuse-A-Shoe: Recycling Your Running Shoes

This is the greatest recycling program a runner can ask for. Old news to some, but worth a reminder.

For years, the accumulation of my old running shoes bothered me. I felt guilty when thinking of donating old shoes to Salvation Army (and who knows if they would have taken them!).

Throwing these shoes out? Even worse.

Then the shoe recycling program through Nike, better known as Nike Reuse-A-Shoe happened. They can actually reuse a good part of the shoe.

And it gets better:

Since Reuse-A-Shoe began, we’ve recycled more than 20 million pairs of athletic shoes (we accept any brand, not just Nike) and we’ve contributed to more than 250 sport surfaces to provide access to places to play for kids as part of Let Me Play, Nike’s global community investment program.

These playground surfaces are so cool: we have one at a park near us. It’s slightly springy and much more kid-friendly than blacktop or other hard surfaces

Local running stores often have collection bins, and some even offer a discount on new pairs for bringing in an old pair.

I haven’t thrown a pair away since.
